Power Plant Operator

The Power Plant Operator is responsible for the safe and proper operation of the Power Plant, Substations and associated control structures.

The Power Plant Operator makes periodic inspections of equipment and necessary repairs to such equipment; perform preventive maintenance, take responsible charge of a watch, read meters, gauges, and other recording devices, log the data and keep records as directed.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Perform a wide variety of tasks to ensure optimal and safe operation of the Generators and associated equipment that produces and distributes Electrical Power.
  • Attend safety Meetings and follow all safety precautions set forth by Glencoe Light and Power.
  • Control the functioning of power-generating equipment to ensure all procedures run smoothly.
  • Interpret the readings on meters and gauges to ensure voltage and electricity flows within the specified parameters.
  • Inspect indicators and equipment for evidence of defects or malfunctions.
  • Manage the flow of power by adjusting the controls when necessary.
  • General Maintenance of Light and Power Facilities and it’s properties.
  • Other duties as needed or as directed by Management.

Required Skills:

  • The ability to operate tools and equipment with a skill level that is typically acquired through trade and/or vocational schools.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Communicate and work cooperatively with others as well as independently with little direction.
  • Must be able to Perform preventive maintenance and routine servicing of equipment, operate specialized machinery, equipment and tools utilized in the repair, installation and maintenance of Light and Power Facilities and Equipment.
  • “Special Engineer” Boiler Certification (within 6-months of hire)
  • Class “A” CDL (within 6-months of hire)

Preferred Skills:

  • A/C & D/C Electrical Knowledge/Experience
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and schematics

This is an On-Call Position, the applicants’ place of residence shall reside within a 30-minute response time to the Light and Power Commission plant.

Light and Power Commission offers a comprehensive wage and benefits package and is an EOE.
